English Guide to Voting in Budapest’s Participatory Budgeting

Get involved in Budapest’s participatory budgeting. Find out how to vote and bring your favorite ideas to life.

What is participatory budgeting?

Participatory budgeting is a democratic process where residents can decide how a part of the city’s budget should be spent. In Budapest, every year the municipality sets aside 1 billion forints for community ideas. If you are over the age of 14 and live, work, or study in Budapest, you can propose and vote for projects that make the city better for everyone.

You don’t need to be Hungarian or speak the language to take part. While the official language of the programme is Hungarian, we do our best to include everyone – and we’re truly counting on the participation of the city’s international community.

This is your chance to leave a mark, shape the city, and have your voice heard.

This year marks the fifth cycle of Budapest’s participatory budgeting. Thousands of ideas, tens of thousands of votes, countless work hours, dozens of community events, and many completed projects show what we can achieve together.

Now, more than 100 new ideas are waiting for your vote!

Bring out the best in Budapest – so Budapest can bring out the best in you. Vote and help decide how to spend 1 billion forints.

HAVE YOUR SAY! VOTE UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30!

Who can vote?

Anyone who lives, works, or studies in Budapest and is 14 years or older. You don’t need Hungarian citizenship or language knowledge to take part – the process is open to everyone in the city.

What is the deadline?

You can vote until September 30, 2025.

What can you vote on?

You can choose from exciting local and citywide projects in five categories:

Local Small Ideas, Local Big Ideas, Green Budapest, Inclusive Budapest, Open Budapest.

You can cast three votes per category.

Local ideas are tied to specific neighbourhoods, while thematic categories (Green, Inclusive, Open) apply citywide.

Thanks to citizens’ participation, we already have:

  • A community repair workshop at Teleki Square, called the Repair Café,
  • New community gardens in Zugló and Gazdagrét,
  • An inclusive playground in Bókay Garden,
  • Drinking fountains across the city,
  • The Autikum Center, a leisure and cultural space for adults with autism,
  • More shaded areas and benches,
  • Safer bike lanes and secure bicycle storages citywide.
