The bell and belvedere tower of the Church of Our Lady of Buda Castle has been refurbished

The bell and belvedere tower of the Church of Our Lady has officially been opened to the public. Mayor István Tarlós has contributed to the reconstruction with HUF 10 million.

- The Church of Our Lady of Budapest Castle, commonly known as Matthias Church, had a huge role in Hungarian history. For centuries state ceremonies were held here, in the middle ages it was the place for the debut of the new king crowned in Székesfehérvár, and even coronations took place here, said István Tarlós. The mayor emphasized that he is proud and honoured that the Municipality of Budapest could support the realization of all three investments, in accordance with its financial opportunities.

Parish priest László Süllei, who has blessed the tower at the beginning of the ceremony said that the church is one of the city’s prides, and that today an exceptional and from a touristic point of view an absolutely determining place has been opened to the public. The tower, as a touristic attraction has probably no match, he said.

Three fire doors have been built in the tower, panels signalling directions and escape routes have been installed, the barriers and safety bars of the terrace have been reinforced, the observation level has received safe flooring as well as a safety net.
